The Bio for Piri Forestone Cabin in Son, Lleida, within the Pyrenees, is a sustainable timber structure crafted from Scots pine wood sourced from Alinyà’s forests through regenerative management practices that restore forest health and enhance wildfire resilience. The cabin’s stone-like form reflects the enduring resilience of the Pyrenean landscape.

The cabin is designed and prefabricated by MAEBB 2025 students at Valldaura Labs and was assembled by students in July 2025 with a minimal footprint at MónNatura Pirineus, a rural Pre-Pyrenees hostel for ecotourism. The cabin interior features textiles woven from sheep wool sourced directly from Son’s shepherds and sheep, repurposing a waste material to support the local bioeconomy and highlight grazing traditions that curb fire-prone vegetation, alongside a hand-carved stone sink crafted by students from local Pyrenean stone.

The charred offcut exterior encodes a historical wildfire timeline in the region while using a eco friendly ‘Yakisugi’ burning technique to protect the wood from the natural elements. Interior wood carvings showcase the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera’s Bio for Piri project, fostering a hopeful future through innovative conservation efforts that ensure a regenerative and resilient Pyrenees.

A timber play structure that reimagines traditional playground design for primary school children through an architectural lens. Made with sustinably sourced timber from Catalonia, this timber installation merges structural innovation with playfulness, creating a spatial experience that encourages exploration, creativity, and physical activity.

This project was designed and built by students at Valldaura Labs, part of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). Located within the Collserola Forest on the outskirts of Barcelona, Valldaura Labs is a self-sufficient campus dedicated to research and experimentation in ecological building and sustainable design.

As part of the Master’s in Advanced Ecological Buildings and Biocities (MAEBB), students live, work, and create in close connection with nature, utilizing local timber, computational design and digital fabrication technologies to craft projects that refelct ecological principles.
